Are you working alongside the natural world for human health, wellbeing, therapeutic reasons
and/or deeper connections? Perhaps you are looking at reciprocal recovery for people and the rest
of nature, or maybe regenerative processes that lead to healthy people: healthy planet?
This will be the first gathering representing a collective of networks organised by Ecotherapy Exeter,
Green Health initiatives in Wales, including the South Powys Ecotherapy Network and West of
England Practitioner Forum for Nature, Health and Wellbeing.
It has come from meetings, organised by Eco-therapy Exeter, that have explored the development of
a larger Nature and Health network that extends across English regions and the other Nations within
It is aimed at a wide range of nature-based practitioners who have a common interest in working with
people’s health and wellbeing. It includes anyone involved in nature-based practice: This could include members of the three networks above as well as nature programme facilitators/leaders, walk leaders, horticultural
therapy leaders, care-farm workers, Forest School leaders who are offering wellbeing; eco-
psychologists, eco-therapists, counsellors and psychotherapists, social workers,
occupational therapists, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists – in private or NHS practice who are
wanting to work with their participants in nature. Anyone else with a professional interest in the
This eco-social movement of practitioners has grown in recent years alongside a
strengthening evidence-base. There is clear evidence of multiple health, wellbeing, therapeutic and holistic benefits from facilitated connection to natural environments. There is also an emerging evidence base that shows this deepening nature connection can lead to greater valuing of the natural world and pro-
Questions we might explore could include: Who are we? How do we support each other? How do
we have a voice? How do we begin to find professional practice guidelines that encourage the
emerging movement? We will also gather further questions from the group and reflect on previous
responses from other events.
Practical themes that we might explore: Training and accreditation, social prescribing, emerging
approaches, funding, evaluation. Getting work and funding Advocacy for commissioners, Action
Research and academic links. With the growing interest in green health opportunities and
social/green prescribing, those working in NHS settings maybe interested in exploring appropriate
governance structures and standards to facilitate signposting or referral from NHS practitioners to
nature-based activities and interventions for physical and mental health and wellbeing.
We will gather at Brown Rock Woodland, just outside Bristol, on the evening of 31st of May around
6 with fire and connections (camping an option). On the 1st of June we will have a convention
exploring some of the questions/themes above, or others that arise. Places are limited so recommended to
book early. As stated above it is possible to just attend the Saturday convention.
